Albemarle County Ransomware Attack

Albemarle County authorities confirmed a ransomware attack that began on June 10, 2023, disrupting internet services in county offices and potentially exposing sensitive data of both government employees and residents. The attack was attributed to INC Ransom, a group reportedly linked to Russia that has executed over 230 attacks targeting various sectors, including healthcare and government.

Abbey Stumpf, a county spokeswoman, stated, "the ransom was not paid to the cybercriminals," and acknowledged that personal data, including names, dates of birth, and Social Security numbers, was likely accessed. The county has since implemented additional security measures and is currently investigating the breach.

The FBI, U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, and the Virginia State Police have been engaged in the investigation. More details can be found on the county's cybersecurity incident webpage.

Identity Protection Services Offered

To support affected residents, Albemarle County is providing one year of free identity protection services through Kroll, a financial and risk advisory firm. This service is available for both residents and employees, and those interested can reach Kroll at (866) 819-9798.

County Executive Jeff Richardson emphasized the importance of personal information security, stating, "We recognize how important personal information is and take our responsibility to protect it seriously."

Residents can contact the county for inquiries at (434) 872-4572 or via email at askaquestion@albemarle.org.

Related Ransomware Incidents in Virginia

Albemarle County is not alone in facing cyber threats. Gloucester County in Virginia also reported a ransomware attack in April 2023, which compromised the personal data of over 3,500 employees. The county's administrator, Carol Steele, confirmed that sensitive information, including Social Security numbers and bank account details, was accessed.

Following the attack, Gloucester County engaged cybersecurity experts and notified the FBI and the Cyber Fusion Center of the Virginia State Police. The BlackSuit ransomware group claimed responsibility for this incident, highlighting the ongoing threat to governmental entities.

The pattern of ransomware attacks emphasizes the necessity for strong cybersecurity measures and the importance of having responsive incident management plans in place.
