TL;DR

  • China's Ministry of State Security alleges the US NSA conducted cyberattacks on its National Time Service Center from 2022-2024. These attacks reportedly exploited vulnerabilities to steal sensitive data and target critical timing systems, raising concerns about potential disruptions to communications, finance, and power grids. The accusations escalate existing geopolitical tensions and counter-accusations between the two nations.

China Accuses US of Cyberattacks on National Time Service Center

Accusations of Cyberattacks

China's Ministry of State Security (MSS) has accused the US National Security Agency (NSA) of conducting cyberattacks on its National Time Service Center. The MSS alleges the attacks exploited vulnerabilities in mobile messaging services to steal sensitive data and target critical timing systems. The Times of India reports that the ministry warned of potential disruptions to network communications, financial systems, and power supply. According to WTOP News, the attacks allegedly took place between 2022 and 2024.

Details of the Alleged Attacks

The MSS claims the NSA exploited vulnerabilities in a foreign mobile phone brand's messaging services in 2022 to steal data from devices used by the center's staff. Associated Press reports that the NSA allegedly used 42 types of "special cyberattack tools" to target internal network systems and infiltrate a key timing system between 2023 and 2024. CNA notes the attacks could have jeopardized power grids, transport, and even space launches.

National Time Service Center

The National Time Service Center, affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, is responsible for generating and distributing China’s standard time. According to the South China Morning Post, it provides timing services for communications, finance, power, transport, mapping, and defense sectors. China Daily reports that authorities have issued guidance to the center to address and remove potential risks.

Tensions and Counter-Accusations

The Chinese government has accused the U.S. of hypocrisy, stating that the U.S. is accusing others of what it does itself. The Ministry of State Security claims the U.S. is exaggerating Chinese cyber threats. Reuters reports that Western governments have accused hackers linked to China of targeting officials, journalists, and corporations. According to AP News, these accusations could further strain relations between Washington and Beijing.
