South Dakota's Cybersecurity Growth

Cybersecurity Awareness Month

The Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) in South Dakota recognizes October as Cybersecurity Awareness Month. The state has developed into a national leader in cybersecurity, creating high-paying jobs and spurring innovation. GOED Commissioner Joe Fiala stated, “South Dakota has emerged as a national leader in cybersecurity, offering high-paying jobs and driving innovation in this critical field.”

Currently, there are 9,200 cybersecurity jobs in the state, with 900 positions available. The average annual salary for existing cybersecurity roles is $86,000, while information security analysts earn around $102,000. The cybersecurity sector contributes approximately $680 million annually to South Dakota’s GDP. Over the last decade, South Dakota has recorded the second-fastest growth in the U.S. cybersecurity industry. For more details, visit South Dakota's Cybersecurity Industry.

Dakota State University Research Lab Expansion

The expansion of the Dakota State University (DSU) Applied Research Lab into Sioux Falls is crucial for the growth of South Dakota’s cybersecurity sector. This facility will cover 100,000 square feet and will join the existing Madison location as a hub for cybersecurity innovation. The lab will feature advanced research spaces and collaborate with government and industry partners.

The Dakota State Applied Research Corporation (DARC) will be a key tenant of the lab, focusing on cybersecurity, data science, and software engineering. DARC aims to promote collaboration between academia and industry, driving innovative solutions to national security challenges. This initiative represents a significant investment from both public and private partners, enhancing South Dakota’s status in the national cybersecurity landscape.

State and Private Sector Collaboration

The increasing cyberattacks on critical infrastructure necessitate cooperation between public and private sectors. Representatives from various organizations in South Dakota met to strengthen cybersecurity measures. Trevor Jones, secretary of the South Dakota Public Safety Department, emphasized, “Cybersecurity is never done. We have to remain vigilant because any attacks on anyone’s digital infrastructure will have far-reaching consequences.”

The discussions focused on protecting electrical grids and communication systems. Stakeholders like SDN Communications, Midco, and Xcel Energy are involved in the partnership. The collaboration aims to enhance threat detection and response capabilities against cyberattacks.

National Cybersecurity Awareness Month Campaign

October is recognized as National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM), initiated in 2004 by the National Cybersecurity Alliance and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. This campaign educates individuals and organizations about online safety and effective cybersecurity practices. The theme for 2025 is Stay Safe Online, highlighting four essential steps to enhance online safety:

  • Use strong passwords and a password manager
  • Turn on multifactor authentication
  • Recognize and report scams
  • Update your software
